Ganglion of Impar Block

Las Vegas Spine and Pain Clinic

Ganglion of Impar Block

The ganglion impar is a cluster of nerves located just in front of where the sacrum and coccyx come together in the very lower part of the spine. This means that it is the bundle of nerves that are in front of the tailbone but behind the rectum. These nerves can become inflamed due to pain syndromes and can result in severe pain. Candidates for the Ganglion of Impar Block usually have pain coming from their rectum, anus, distal urethra, vulva, coccyx bone, and distal third of the vagina.

A ganglion of impar block procedure is an injection of a local anesthetic into this nerve cluster and can be performed by a pain management specialist at Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center. A series of injections are often needed, but most patients will notice a significant reduction in pain symptoms. The procedure usually takes only 10 minutes and is generally not painful. The most common side effects are temporary pain or soreness at the injection site, but most people can return to activities the following day. The medication can last weeks to months, and if you respond well after the first injection it may be beneficial to have repeated injections. Patients will start feeling pain relief hours after the procedure and can expect anywhere between 50%-100% pain relief from this injection. To learn more about the step by step procedure below.

Our procedure:

  • An IV is administered to sedate you and make you more comfortable.
  • Numbing medication is placed around the injection site before placement of the needle.
  • Our doctor will use x-ray guidance and contrast dye to ensure that the needle is in the correct placement.
  • A local anesthetic and steroid are then injected into the joint, and the needle is removed.

If you are suffering from pain in the viscera, pelvis, genitals, and/or perineum this procedure may be truly life-changing for you. Luckily if you are in Las Vegas, there is a Board Certified Pain Management Specialist near you that you can call and see if you are a candidate for a Ganglion of Impar Block.
