Celiac Plexus Block

What is Celiac Plexus Block?

Celiac Plexus blocks help relieve abdominal pain, commonly due to cancer or chronic pancreatitis. Located near the upper part of the abdomen along the spine, the celiac plexus is a collection of nerves that can become inflamed or compressed, causing pain and debilitation. A celiac plexus block is an injection that destroys the nerves, thereby interrupting the pain signals and providing relief from pain. A trial block is usually performed, in which a local anesthetic is injected into the affected area. If the patient sees short-term pain relief from this trial injection, then the long term neurolytic block is performed, destroying the nerves.

What to expect during a celiac plexus block procedure?

After we give you infusion or intravenous medication to relax you, we will lie you on your stomach on an x-ray table. Then after we numb you back with a local anesthetic the procedure will usually go as follows.

  • Insert a thin needle into your back near the spine to inject a local anesthetic.
  • Insert a second needle on another side of the spine.
  • Inject a dye to confirm that the medication will go to the correct spot
  • Inject pain medication, to help destroy the nerves

This takes about 30 minutes and you can go home on the same day. The pain relief from celiac plexus blocks can last for weeks or even years as it depends on the patient. Some people only need one or two injections while others can do more than 10. Side effects can include low blood pressure and diarrhea. A Celiac Plexus block could be right for you if you have chronic abdominal pain.
